Place: Gurugram
Area: Apartment Design, Living Area, Bedroom, Bathroom
This project was for a client in Gurugram, Haryana. We designed the interior in a British colonial style for his residence with typically high ceilings to let the heat rise and keep the room and bit cooler. Oversized ceiling fans were also used to keep the rooms cool.
Walls are usually solid white in color. Windows are used to let in light and a breeze. Shutters on the windows helped control the light and protect the windows in bad weather. British expatriates liked formal furniture in dark mahogany wood that withstands humid climates and we executed the project keeping this in our mind.
Upholstery is solid white in color and at some furniture we used checkered fabric too. In colonial period, they also appreciated the campaign furniture style, which is furniture that is easily packed and moved. We gave Campaign furniture which were made of lighter weight local materials, such as bamboo, wicker, and rattan. Steamer trunks and suitcases are used as furniture. We did use some botanical prints and animal prints as accent fabrics and we used them as wall papers also. Rugs are in a natural colored jute, sisal, or sea grass or locally purchased oriental rugs.
In bedrooms, there is a four poster mahogany bed surrounded by a solid white mosquito netting. We also hung ornate mirrors on the wall. The client was well traveled and liked to show off his quality home furnishings. Indoor plants are very common in British colonial style homes.
We enjoyed displaying fine crystal, fine china, silver items, Asian blue and white porcelain, pineapple symbols, animal horn, tortoise shell, hurricane lamps, seashells, maps, and telescopes.
We thoroughly enjoyed working on this project.
